Duke Paoa Kahanamoku United States Postal Service Honolulu, Hawaii, First Day of Issue. (The card which holds the envelope says) Honolulu, Hawaii was fittingly chosen as the city to first release the new stamp honoring Hawaiian swimmer, surfer and Olympic Games gold medalist, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. Renowned not only for his athletic prowness, but for his grace, humility and good sportmanship, Duke is widely considered to be the father in international surfing, and for much of his life he served as a living symbol of Hawaiian hospitality and goodwill to the rest of the world. The portrait on the stamp, an oil painting by Michael J. Deas, is based on a 1918 photograph from the collection of the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. To mark this historic event, the Honolulu post office is pleased to offer this "silk" cachet envelope featuring vintage surfing scenes and bearing the new stamp postmarked with a special "first-day-of-issue" cancellation.
